According to stats, e-books were likely to take over paper books by 2015. However, as we look upon the sales of e-books lately, they have gone down by a margin. Now let us talk about the psychology behind this. There was a time between 2008 and 2010 when the sales of eBooks escalated by 87%. Then how come all of a sudden people discarded eBooks, and the paper books or the printed books are back as the show stoppers?
Ideally, eBooks make the task of reading a lot easier. They are easy to fit in a bag or easy to carry, they come with font size flexibility, and are comparatively less expensive than their printed counterparts. What else would you want? The paper books don’t offer these! Despite all these benefits of eBooks, research says that about 90% of the students prefer paper books.
So let us lay some light upon why people still prefer paper books?
Most of the readers I came across are not only passionate about their books but also kind of possessive. These paper books matter to them a lot. A professor from the University of Arizona who studies human behavior and psychology shared with us that readers feel more emotionally attached to their physical books.
It may sound a bit weird, but readers enjoy the texture of the paper of their new books, the authentic smell, and the ability to highlight or write on paper books.
Easier on the eye
While eBooks offer all the conveniences of the world, paper books are easier on the eyes. For those who like to read as they fall asleep, paper books are a better choice as they do not cause any eye strain as eBooks or any other electronic device does. If you work on a computer all day, reading an eBook is the last thing you would want to do.
Readers want to enjoy their reading time, it’s an activity of relaxation for them. However, the eBooks diminish the whole purpose of it with the strain they cause to the eyes. Excessive use of eBooks can also result in a headache.
eBooks and Paper books are entirely different products. And each has its advantages. But the paper books have an edge over because of the authentic feeling they give to the readers. Paper books offer much more richness as they involve more senses. While this is a stiff choice between the two, do let us know about your preference in the comment section!
